During Covid, I did not just graft a few apple trees. I grafted an orchard — thirty trees, filled with old heirloom cider apples, dessert apples, and strange pre-colonial varieties most people have never heard of. It became one of those projects that was part hobby, part obsession, and part way of building something when the world felt like it had stopped.
I make hard cider, so the orchard has always been more than decoration to me. It is future fruit, future fermenting, future bottles, and future stories.
This waxwing was not on one of the grafted trees, but on an old apple already growing on the property, gorging itself on blossoms like it had found the best seat in the house.
