Long Pond Ice Gallery

from $70.00

On the Southwest Harbor side of Long Pond — once known as Great Pond — this happens almost every year. Wind, cold, water, and shoreline brush go to work together, and by the time they are done the lake has opened a gallery no one had to build.

I have come back to photograph it year after year, because it is never the same twice. Cold is tenacious, but wind is relentless, and until one finally wins over the other they seem locked in a kind of battle.

What they leave behind is nature’s art: clear ice wrapped around twigs and grass, lit by the last color of the day, free to enter and gone as soon as the weather changes.
