My backyard on Mount Desert Island is a mix of field and edge, the kind of place deer seem to understand better than we do. With no deer hunting on MDI, they are everywhere, and most years there are one or two does that give birth right here around the house.
Over the summer we get to watch the fawns appear, wobble, hide, grow braver, and eventually become part of the daily rhythm of the yard.
This spruce has become one of the favored waiting places — the sort of spot where a new mother seems to say, stay here for Mama. And somehow the fawn does, folded into the grass and shadow, trusting the oldest instructions in the world.
